Cycle 3 Week 1

Another week gone and a brand-new project to start, however this time, the whole class will be working as a single team. This cycle is focused on VR as the game has to support a VR headset, namely the HTC Vive provided by SAE. The game should contain at least 3 skill-based mini-games which highscores can be improved with repeat play-throughs. This cycle, we didn’t need to pitch our game, but have a class discussion with the lecturer on order to decide on the game we were going to make. With Red Dead Redemption 2 just being released, everyone was already on the topic of westerns. Naturally, we all came to an agreement to make a western-style game. The game will be set in a saloon where the minigames take place in different areas of it. Now was assigning the roles

We decided to assign one person each to every minigame and the hubworld as head for their production and have everyone else free to work on any of the minigames, changing whenever their skills are needed elsewhere. Isaac was in charge of the shooting minigame, which takes place in a shooting range out back. Blake was in charge of the throwing game set by the saloon’s stairs, with targets to throw knives and axes. Kim was in charge of the serving game behind the saloon bar, where the player will have to mix and serve a plethora of different drinks to the cowboys at the bar. Finally, Lawrence and I were leading the production of the hubworld, where the player explores, travels between mini-games and pretty much mess around with things.

My first (and probably main) task is to implement all the mechanics into the VR. This is something that I was really looking forward to as I think VR has a great potential in the future of gaming, so learning how to make games in VR will give me a great head start in later projects, both personal and professional. Thankfully, the VRTK (Virtual Reality Toolkit) already provides a lot of documentation and support for creating VR games, so this week I’m going to have to read through it all.
